Pro Bono Spotlight ~ Lawyers Going the Extra Mile
Hoge, Fenton, Jones & Appel, Inc.
On November 15, 2006, The Santa Clara
County Bar Association (SCCBA) awarded the first ever SCCBA Pro Bono
Service Award to the law firm of Hoge, Fenton, Jones & Appel, Inc.
The SCCBA Pro Bono Award recognizes sustained commitment to
extraordinary pro bono service in Santa Clara County. To determine
the recipient, the SCCBA Pro Bono Committee considered three
factors:
| |
1. |
Provision of direct legal services to
indigent members of the community;
|
| |
2. |
Provision of additional service to the
legal profession by service on boards of legal service
agencies or bar associations, or service organizations that
serve the needy; and
|
| |
3. |
Provision of financial support to legal
service agencies which provide services to indigent members
of our community.
|
Hoge, Fenton, Jones, &
Appel provides an outstanding example of commitment to service in
all three areas. First, Hoge Fenton attorneys provide many hours of
direct pro bono service to the less fortunate in the community. For
example many of its attorneys have participated in the Pro Bono
Project's "Lawyers in the Library" program and have acted as
supervising attorneys for the Katherine and George Alexander
Community Law Center. Hoge Fenton attorney Rob Coelho is a prime
example of dedicated service to the Community Law Center. Mr. Coelho
spent more than 50 hours supervising students in a wage and hour
case that was aggressively litigated to a successful outcome.

Second, Hoge Fenton is synonymous with service to the
Santa Clara County Bar Association and the broader legal community.
Hoge Fenton counts in its ranks one former State Bar President and
three former SCCBA presidents. Its attorneys serve or have served on
numerous community boards including the Mexican Heritage Plaza or
Centro Cultural de San Jose (MHC). Community Foundation Silicon
Valley, the Second Harvest Food Bank, and the Valley Medical Center
Foundation.
Finally Hoge Fenton is in the forefront of financial
contributions to legal service agencies. Jim Towery was a
co-founder, first president, and still current board member of the
Silicon Valley Campaign for Legal Services (SVCLS). The SVCLS now
distributes more than half a million dollars annually to local legal
service agencies. Hoge Fenton has fully participated in every annual
campaign since SVCLS's inception. Over and above the SVCLS activity,
Hoge Fenton has made direct contributions to legal service agencies
including the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley, the Pro Bono
Project, and the Katharine and George Alexander Community Law
Center.
The Santa Clara County Bar Association is proud to
shine its pro bono spot light on Hoge Fenton Jones & Appel for going
the extra mile on behalf of those in our community who would not
otherwise have access to legal representation.
